we ask \u201cWhat do you think of this project (of mine), I just told you about?\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to a few people we trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let them be friends,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
some colleagues we\u2019re close with,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But as soon as we start doing that;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
asking people around for their opinion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and hoping someone will say \u201cYes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think this could work )\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we get three (3) kinds of feedback;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First one,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the kind that opens our eyes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh ! You\u2019re right ! I didn\u2019t see this. Thank you\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
there\u2019s the kind that gets us to shake our head down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and fell somewhat ashamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUgh. She\u2019s right. It\u2019s not as good as I thought. It got so obvious when she asked me that question, and all I could say was: \u201cI don\u2019t know. I didn\u2019t even think about that\u201d. (\u2026) But maybe I could actually use this, her comments. To change my project a bit. And make it better. If I can…\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third kind of feedback?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This one is some sort of a \u201cTrojan horse\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cause…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it\u2019s a comment that sounds like it\u2019s about your project but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when you let it sink in\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
you realize it\u2019s in fact about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About how unfit,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or how \u201cyou don\u2019t have what it takes to get things done\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and make the-project-you-have-in-mind come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least in the eyes of the person you opened up to,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
about your idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell\u2026 Even ____ (fill the blank with the name of a famous person or known company), who had more ____ (ex: experience, money, resources) than you do, failed at this. What makes you think you\u2019ll be able to succeed?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This kind of feedback tends to be the one that hurts the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even if,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
afterwards,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the person who made the comment says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want to be rude… But I thought you\u2019d want me to be honest\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it still hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So much so that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in some cases,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it\u2019s enough to make us want to pull the plug,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
on a project we got excited about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And pull it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
even before we took the time to check if,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
anyone around us\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or in the past\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ever had a project like ours and made it work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How can we shake off the feedback that can have this sort of impact on us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that helps us in no way,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at getting ourselves one step or…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
even one inch\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
closer to our goal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There’s an equation you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To decide if you should (whether) pull the plug on that thing you care about,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or keep going at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The formula goes like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
