you and me…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we can all plateau,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


And for different reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


For example…<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When we feel we\u2019ve been full circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cause we\u2019re sure we\u2019ve learned \u201ceverything that\u2019s important to know\u201d in our job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when we\u2019ve come to gauge how much effort,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and time,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we must put into our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it meets our boss\u2019 standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when we get bored by the work itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cause it\u2019s repetitive,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it\u2019s short on the variety of things we can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or the number of people we get to meet,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or talk with,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on any given day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


There\u2019s also when…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what we get in return for \u201cputting in an extra effort\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

remains the same as when we \u201cmake the minimum required\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Like…<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Punching 50 hours a week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than the 40,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that most people on your team settle for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get paid for 40,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cCause you\u2019re on a year-based salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not an hourly-based one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Getting more customers to buy something at the boutique…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on average,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

per month…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

than your colleagues do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You all get the same pay raise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cCause it wouldn\u2019t be fair to everyone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

if you each got a different raise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


So says your boss,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or your employer\u2019s policies pamphlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A situation that leaves you thinking something that sounds like :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo… I\u2019m not working for a company that likes to change how things get done, when it can. You know, make them better. Even if only a little. Nope ! I\u2019m working for a bunch of people who just want things to stick to the way they are. Cause that\u2019s how this company \u2018s been making money, for… I don\u2019t know how long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Put in other words,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you feel you\u2019re working for a company that lives by this (timeworn) <\/em>mantra :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy fix it, if it ain\u2019t broken\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


How do you find room to get better at the work you do,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you feel you\u2019ve plateaued ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


You can try to take your skills set to the next level,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at your job,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or in your field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


By making the case to your boss that you should get a promotion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or more responsibilities in your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or by asking for a bigger pay raise than your colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or by sending your resume around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To companies you think they\u2019d be interested in hiring a guy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or gal like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the background that you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


But…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

what\u2019s to say you won\u2019t plateau,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

again,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in that new job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Once you\u2019ve learned all the nuts and bolts that come with a new role?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you\u2019ve got good at meeting a boss\u2019 standards,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all over again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Learning what plateaus are about helps finding some answers (to these questions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n


As,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the most part,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

plateaus are about knowledge,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Meaning,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cthe things you\u2019ve got to learn…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to carry out a certain task…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and how are you supposed to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Which leaves a big chunk of \u201cdoing a job\u201d all by itself;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

your style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which relates to \u201cpersonal taste\u201d and \u201cpersonal touch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Take this for an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Two accountants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


They both have a degree from the same college,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the same program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


They work for the same consulting firm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and print out the same list of pre-formatted \u201cfiscal year reports\u201d to all their clients,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but…<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When it\u2019s time to give these reports,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

though,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

here\u2019s what the junior accountant does:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– He meets with his client in person;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Takes the time to go through the reports\u2019 summary;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– He highlights 2 or 3 key differences between the most recent balance sheet and that of the year before;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– And explains his invoice;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– All before leaving his client with this: \u201cTake the time to read the reports, and call me if you have any question. Or need any advice on how to get the tax credits or apply for the R&D subsidies I told you about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


All while the senior accountant does this,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with his own client:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– He asks his assistant to send the reports and invoice, by mail, to the client;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– And to make sure to add this note in the envelope: \u201cHi Sarah. Just like last year, here are your company\u2019s financial reports for this year. Call me if you have questions. Pete. P.S. My invoice is at the back of this note.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Same work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different \u201cdelivery\u201d style,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sort of speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The fun part?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


You can notice the same kind of difference between two baristas,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who are told (by their manager) to draw a flower,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in the foam,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on top of every coffee they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or among a group of sales reps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


One reason why is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExecution\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or \u201cthe following of a certain list of steps to carry out a task\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is what makes \u201cthe content of your work\u201d the same as everyone else\u2019s on your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But \u201cstyle\u201d is what sets you and your work apart from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


So,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when you notice you\u2019re going round in circles,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cmoving your skills set to a different head office\u201d is one option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


But how long before you plateau again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or a hiring manager lets this comment slip through,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

during an interview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt would just be too risky for us to hire you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cause you like to jump ship (syn: job hopping) too often. Almost every 12 months or so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Yet…<\/p>\n\n\n\n


How many ways are there to draw art,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on top of a coffee?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


How many versions of \u201cWhat can I help you with?\u201d can you ask,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to learn what someone is looking for,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when they walk in your boutique?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

arguments you can use to make her look at 2 or 3 \u201cbest possible matches\u201d to her need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


How many times can you take a report,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and give it to a client one way,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or another?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Is there even a limit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As to how many times you can change,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

tweak,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sharpen or polish your style?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Not that I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Cause,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as opposed to a \u201clist of steps\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cstyle\u201d always provides room to get better at the work you do…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and let you find the sort of progress,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
