Why do they both feel like a \u201ctrap for failure\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at times?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hope is a wish for a certain event to happen,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
with no \u201cobligation of result\u201d string tied to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An expectation is also a wish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But with a yearning to see it become a reality, on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when you look around,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
everything seems to make it likely to come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What gets hopes and expectations mistaken for one another,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at times,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
both can be raised or lowered as we please.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they can be directed towards others or ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Third,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
hopes and expectations are always tied to a goal,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to some sort of \u201cdestination\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGoing to these ACT prep classes, I hope I\u2019ll be able to score high enough, on the exam, to get into college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLooking at the pay raise my boss gave me, I can now expect to start saving for a home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And fourth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
they can both get someone to shed a boatload of tears,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or drop a truckload of f-bombs,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when things don\u2019t pan out the way we wished they would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But here\u2019s where the difference between hopes that come true,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
expectations that are met,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and the ones that leave some people feel like a failure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at times,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
can be found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the amount of efforts you put at making your expectations as down-to-earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and actionable as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
