Stories like the one above show that other people\u2019s opinions,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and actions,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
have an influence on the decisions we make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meaning you,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But this goes against what the self-growth movement would like you and I to believe;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that we should \u201cstop caring about what other people say (about us)\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
if we want to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or as some others will put it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got to \u201cdo you\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reality is,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we don\u2019t live in a vaccum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or on an island,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
cut-off from all civilzation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cause everyday,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
you and I interact with other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We get bits of information from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through news stories they share with us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
memories they\u2019ve been reminded of,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
facts they\u2019ve came across,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
anecdotes they\u2019ve gathered that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or through the advices and tips they give us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when they hear we\u2019ve been struggling with an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
this sharing is done in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other times,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it\u2019s over the phone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
through an email,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the radio or else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We do the same ourselves, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharing bits of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On top of that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we also give our opinions about these facts,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
stories or news we\u2019ve just shared,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or been told about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cause they make us react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From \u201ca lot\u201d to \u201cnot much\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And depending how strong of a chord a bit of advice or information strikes in us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
its impact on the decisions we come to make,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at some point,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
changes too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For instance,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when the babies cried,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the mom in the story above might have felt her guts wrecking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From guilt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can\u2019t leave them alone\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or from shame;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI should know better. (\u2026) I\u2019m a bad mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
she might have experienced some sort of \u201coomph\u201d coming from somewhere deeper,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
inside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cause of some empathy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey need a mom who can look out for them\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just right before she felt a burst of determination;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know how, yet, but I\u2019ll find a way to change my situation and support my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or when her husbands would tell her: \u201cYou can\u2019t make it without me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She might have noticed her hands turning into fists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her neck and shoulder getting tensed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then a ball of fire growing in, both, her belly and eyes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
out of anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Out of a desire for revenge;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll show you what I\u2019m capable of!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or out of sheer determination;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll find a way to manage to support my self and the kids, without you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fact that these babies made their mom go along with what they cried out for;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a need for help,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and that her different husbands got her to go away,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
each time,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
cause of their attitude towards her,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
it raises the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
which opinion (or action) should we \u201clet in\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
consider,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or simply \u201cleave out\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when we need to make a decision?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One direction we can look into for an answer is that of vacuum cleaners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As vacuum machines don\u2019t let \u201ceverything\u201d in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They have different head brushes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
different \u201cfilters\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that allow them to \u201cpick things up\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but avoid getting all clogged up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even industrial-built<\/p>\n\n\n\n
vacuum street-sweepers don\u2019t pick up,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
don\u2019t \u201clet in\u201d every piece or type of litter,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
waste or trash they come across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They\u2019re selective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe just as we should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You and I might not have head-brushes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
per say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
but there are \u201cfilters\u201d we can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
when we feel stuck about a decision to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first \u201cfilter\u201d we can use is the way a story or an opinion makes us react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow do I feel about what he just told me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Am I depressed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Am I all fired up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Does it simply leave me cold (vf: indiff\u00e9rent), cause I don\u2019t care?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there\u2019s also this other filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A question as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf I do as this person (of group of people) says, who\u2019s interest will it serves best? Hers\/theirs or mine?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People might want and try to influence the choices we make,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
you and I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cinfluencing\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cdeciding\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By setting our own filters,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
we get to choose what we want to let in,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
or brush aside,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sort of speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You get to help yourself in another way too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cause you remind yourself that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at the end of the day,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
you get to decide how you want to use your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether you want to go forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a clear mind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and do things,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
achieve goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or to go in circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the impression of walking with a clogged vacuum bag instead of your head, sitting on your shoulders,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and get nothing done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
